“Need to make India self-reliant in pulses”: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told reporters in Jabalpur that on 11 October the Agriculture Department will roll out two new programmes to help farmers and boost India’s food security. The launch will coincide with the birthday of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, a key figure in the Quit India Movement and a former opposition leader.

The first initiative, called the Pulses Mission, aims to make India self‑reliant in pulse production. India is the world’s biggest producer, consumer and importer of pulses, and many districts still grow below national averages. The mission will purchase Tur, Urad and Masoor from farmers at a minimum support price (MSP), giving them a stable income and encouraging higher yields.

The second programme is the Prime Minister Krishi Dhan‑Dhaanya Yojana. It targets districts with low productivity, aiming to lift them to average output levels. Chouhan also announced a new natural farming mission, promoting eco‑friendly methods that reduce chemical use.

In addition to agricultural plans, Chouhan praised the success of the Prime Minister Housing Scheme in Madhya Pradesh. The state received 19 lakh new homes in one year. To correct complaints that some families were missing from the list, a fresh survey is underway, ensuring no one is left without a house.

Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, who led opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and helped bring the Janata Party to power in 1977, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1999. His legacy of fighting for people’s rights continues to inspire the new missions announced today.
