Improve way to deal with players at back-end of their careers: Ashwin’s message to BCCI amid Virat, Rohit speculations

Former India spin star Ravichandran Ashwin slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for how it handled the transition of power from star batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Ashwin said the board missed a chance to explain its long‑term plans for the team, especially as the country heads toward the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

The controversy started last week when chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced that Rohit would no longer captain the team in One‑Day Internationals (ODIs) and that Shubman Gill would take over. The move left fans and pundits worrying: Are Rohit and Kohli still in India’s future plans? “We need a clear road‑map for the 2027 World Cup,” Ashwin told viewers on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin criticized BCCI for poor communication, especially with veteran players who are nearing the end of their careers. He asked why the board didn’t talk to Rohit and Kohli when they stepped down from Twenty‑20 International matches after the last World Cup win. “If we had talked then, they could have said, ‘We’re ready to play or we’re ready to retire,’” he said. “Instead, it left room for speculation and uncertainty.”

The cricketer highlighted the importance of “knowledge transfer” (KT) in cricket India. KT doesn’t just mean teaching new players how to bat; it involves passing on how to handle pressure, injuries and leadership responsibilities. Ashwin pointed out that India has no formal transition process: “There’s no template for moving from one captain to another or one coach to a successor, so KT can’t happen organically.”

He also noted that the lack of a clear plan leaves the national team without a roadmap for leadership changes. If BCCI wants India to remain competitive for the 2027 World Cup and beyond, it must improve how it communicates with its players, especially those in the twilight of their careers such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

By keeping the message direct and free of jargon, Ashwin hopes the cricket board will adopt better communication habits and create a smoother leadership transition going forward.
