Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai warned that mixed court rulings can weaken India’s legal system. Speaking to lawyers and legal experts at an Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) symposium, he emphasized that the law only protects citizens when courts deliver clear, predictable decisions.
“Predictable and logical judgments let people exercise their rights with confidence,” Gavai said. He added that inconsistent opinions erode trust in the courts.
The meeting also welcomed Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Delhi High Court chief justice Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay, and Union Law Secretary Anju Rathi Rana. Gavai praised ITAT for cutting case backlogs from 84,000 to 24,000—a sign of good teamwork between lawyers and judges.
However, he pointed out that tax disputes worth more than ₹6.85 lakh crore, or over 2% of India’s GDP, still sit on ITAT’s docket. “Tax matters touch everyone’s lives,” he said, urging reforms to boost the tribunal’s efficiency and credibility.
Meghwal noted that ITAT has served India for 84 years, since 1941, and plays a key role in the country’s fast‑growing economy. He highlighted the tribunal’s record of delivering justice to more than 30 lakh appellants over the years. ()
