Mumbai, Oct 9 – The UK’s new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stepped into the heart of Bollywood in Mumbai, touring Yash Raj Films (YRF) studio with actress Rani Mukerji, the wife of YRF head Aditya Chopra. The visit comes as part of a large‑scale cultural partnership the two sides will launch this year.
Starmer announced that YRF will film a series of major productions in the United Kingdom beginning in 2026. The plan will create more than 3,000 jobs and give a boost to the UK’s film industry and local economies. “Bollywood is back in Britain, and it’s bringing jobs, investment and opportunity,” he said. “This partnership unlocks the promise of our trade deal with India and strengthens cultural ties across the country.”
Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani welcomed the PM to the studio, noting that the UK has always been a favourite location for YRF movies. “Many of our iconic films, like ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ), were shot in this beautiful, welcoming country,” he said. “We are honoured to host Prime Minister Starmer and look forward to new global collaborations.”
DDLJ, the film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, tells the love story of second‑generation Indian immigrants in London and is celebrating its 30th anniversary on Oct 20, 2025. The film’s enduring popularity and its London setting underline why British audiences still love Bollywood’s storytelling.
The partnership signals a growing cultural bond between India and the UK, with the film community eager to see fresh stories shared by both sides. As Starmer and YRF move forward, fans of Bollywood and UK cinema can expect new projects that blend the best of both worlds.
