Mumbai, India – Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Mumbai, the economic heart of India, on Wednesday to talk about the growing partnership between the UK and India. He praised Indian leader Narendra Modi and India’s rapid economic progress, saying he “convinced” that Modi’s vision of a “Visit Bharat” by 2047 is within reach.

Starmer highlighted India’s ambition to become the world’s third‑largest economy by 2028. “All I’ve seen here proves you’re on track. The UK wants to be a partner on that journey,” he told reporters. He also described the UK‑India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) as a “breakthrough moment” that cuts tariffs, opens markets and creates jobs in both countries.

The two leaders held a bilateral meeting at the Raj Bhawan, where they issued a joint statement. Starmer underscored India’s role in supporting peace in the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts, and the UK‑India relationship’s contribution to global stability. He added that both nations share a commitment to maritime security in the Indo‑Pacific.

The visit follows Prime Minister Modi’s July trip to the UK, during which the trade deal was signed and nearly £6 billion in new investment and export opportunities were confirmed.

In a message on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said, “Together for stronger India‑UK ties.” The post featured Modi welcoming Starmer at Raj Bhawan.

Starmer’s trip reinforces the growing UK‑India partnership, boosting trade, investment and shared security interests in an era of global uncertainty.
