The Delhi High Court told the Election Commission of India (ECI) to give Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh (ABJS) a common election symbol for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
ABJS had asked the court for a symbol after the ECI rejected its request on September 1, saying the party had internal disputes. The court’s order now requires the ECI to allot a symbol and also directs ABJS to file an application for the allotment.
The party was registered in 1989 and has tried to secure a symbol for years. It first approached the ECI with letters on June 2 and July 4, but received no response. It then filed a petition with the Delhi High Court, which was dismissed on August 25.
After the court accepted the party’s August 25 petition, ABJS challenged the ECI’s September 1 denial, arguing that the commission had not considered its earlier application. The party submitted a revised letter and the necessary documents on August 25, complying with the format in the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
The Delhi High Court now urges the ECI to act quickly and provide a common symbol so ABJS can compete in Bihar’s 2025 elections.
