Sabarimala gold case: Ruckus continues in Kerala Assembly, LoP Satheesan blames Left MLAs

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 9 – Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan slammed Kerala’s ruling coalition after a tense day in the state assembly.

After walking out of the assembly, Satheesan told reporters outside the doors that ministers and LDF (Left Democratic Front) lawmakers had made “unparliamentary” remarks and deliberately worked to stop the assembly from functioning. He said the Speaker let these politicians speak off‑limits while a large body of watch‑and‑ward staff clamped down on opposition protests.

“Opposition members were still walking the hallways demanding that Minister Vasavan resign and that certain Devaswom Board members be removed,” Satheesan said. “But watch‑and‑ward guards stopped M. Vincent from speaking freely, and Saneesh Kumar Joseph was even hurt. The Speaker pushed the meeting along with heavy security, ignoring the inappropriate comments from ministers and MLAs,” he added.

Satheesan named CPI(M) MP P.P. Chitharanjan for calling people with disabilities “insulting” and Minister Ganesh Kumar for targeting M. Vincent, the president of the KSRTC INTUC workers’ union. He accused Speaker and ministers Rajesh and Rajeev of repeatedly insulting the opposition, calling the behavior “anti‑democratic.”

The newly‑charged case over the Dwarapalaka idol of Lord Ayyappa also drew Satheesan’s attention. “The real problem isn’t that the idol was cut or sold. We exposed the theft. If the court hadn’t stepped in, the gold idol could have gone missing too,” he said. “Now only the gold idol of Ayyappa remains.”

Given that the assembly session will likely end without a fixed date, the opposition plans to continue its protests outside the building. The party has already announced a series of marches across Kerala, including a planned march from Chengannur to Lord Ayyappa’s birthplace on Oct 18. The protests will demand accountability from Leader of the Left government over the temple thefts.
