In Darjeeling, West Bengal, residents have been hit hard by weeks of heavy rain. The downpour has destroyed roads, knocked out power, and caused landslides that have crushed houses and shops.
A key road that connects the town of Dudhia to Mirik and even extends into Nepal is now blocked by debris. People who live on the road say a bridge that once let them travel to nearby villages has collapsed, trapping them in the valley. “The bridge is broken and there’s no electricity,” one shopkeeper told Reuters. “We had to leave early, but there is no way to get help.” He begged state officials to send support.
Another local, Amrit Thani, echoed the community’s frustration. “The main road is gone, and I can’t reach anyone. The state chief minister did speak about compensation for those who died, but what about the families who lost everything?” he asked.
Govt officials are stepping in. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited the flooded areas on Wednesday, taking a close look at the damage and speaking with victims. He urged the West Bengal ruling party, the Trinamool Congress, to map the disaster zones and roll out relief and rehabilitation plans. “We need to do more than talk,” Rijiju said. “The state must act on the ground.”
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already confirmed that 27 people have died in the rain‑driven floods, including one from Nepal and another from Bhutan, and that many more are still displaced or homeless. The CM flew to Siliguri to meet survivors, but residents want a concrete action plan that will rebuild roads, restore electricity, and secure new homes.
Darjeeling’s situation highlights how severe monsoon rains can devastatingly impact small hill communities. As the district recovers, state leaders face pressure to fast‑track relief and rebuild infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.
