The BJP has pledged full support to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Chief Electoral Officer in West Bengal to scrub the state’s voter rolls of bogus names, especially those belonging to illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, said Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in the assembly.
Adhikari told reporters that “around 10 million” bogus voters could be on the rolls. He explained that people who crossed the state’s porous borders at places like Cooch Behar and North 24 Parganas used fake papers to register as voters. The BJP wants those names removed so the list shows only eligible voters.
“ We will stand with the ECI to delete these names until the final list is released,” Adhikari said. He added the party will keep close tabs on the process.
Meanwhile, a central ECI team led by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti is touring West Bengal to check readiness for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a major voter‑roll update planned after October 15. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has questioned whether the SIR can finish amid the festival season. She asked if the ECI will act independently or follow the BJP’s wishes, and if the voter list will still protect citizens’ democratic rights.
The last SIR in West Bengal was in 2002. Trinamool Congress leaders have opposed the revision, saying it feels like a step toward an NRC‑style crackdown. The BJP argues that the opposition’s resistance lets illegal infiltrators stay on the rolls.
This debate comes as the state prepares for the next elections, with both parties pushing for a clean, accurate voter list and a fair, transparent electoral process.
