New Delhi, Oct 9 – Agentic AI is poised to transform India’s telecom landscape, a KPMG India report said on Thursday. The technology promises self‑healing networks, predictive maintenance, hyper‑personalised customer engagement and real‑time service orchestration.

Over 97 % of telecom firms in India are either using AI or evaluating it, and 49 % already rely on it every day. Half of operators have rolled out their first Generative AI use case, but the study calls for scaling pilots into full‑scale deployments. That means building AI‑ready infrastructure and training teams that can manage the new tools.

The report points to a $49 million investment in the next year, split evenly between hiring new tech talent ($25 million) and improving customer experience ($24 million). India’s massive scale and data richness—more than 18 billion UPI transactions a month—make it an ideal test bed for large‑scale AI. The country also benefits from supportive policy reforms and a vibrant AI startup ecosystem.

India leads the global telecom growth story. With 1.2 billion mobile subscribers and about 800 million broadband users, it accounts for a large share of worldwide connectivity. Avg. mobile data use is nearly 32 GB a month, among the highest in the world. The sector’s financial health is improving sharply: average revenue per user (ARPU) climbed to roughly Rs 174.46, and wireless data revenue grew 15.5 % year‑on‑year to Rs 2.15 trillion in FY 24‑25.

KPMG’s National Leader for TMT, Akhilesh Tuteja, said, “Agentic AI isn’t just a tech upgrade – it’s a strategic shift that lets telecom operators move from reactive to autonomous systems. The result will be higher efficiency, deeper personalization and stronger revenue growth.” He added that India’s scale and innovation ecosystem uniquely position it to lead the global AI revolution in telecom, setting a benchmark for others.

On a global scale, 65 % of telecom operators expect to boost AI spending in 2025, directing funds to AI‑ready infrastructure and workforce upskilling. Start‑ups, academia and partners are urged to collaborate, creating an inclusive, intelligent telecom future.
