Lee Greenwood Agrees He’d Be ‘great’ Super Bowl Halftime Headliner After Mike Johnson Suggests He Replace Bad Bunny

Lee Greenwood says he’s ready to take the stage at the Super Bowl 2026 halftime show, after Speaker Mike Johnson suggested the country star could replace Bad Bunny. The 82‑year‑old told Page Six on Thursday that he “agrees” with Johnson and that he would make a great performer for any Super Bowl event.

Greenwood, who has sung the national anthem at League‑of‑American‑Football (NFL) games every season and will perform at a Dallas Cowboys match next month, added that he looks forward to “getting the crowd going” before Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican rapper, hits the field. He said the NFL might even let him perform at the Super Bowl before the game, rallying fans with “God Bless The U.S.A.” and easing into the main show.

Mike Johnson, who was on the news for a poor decision to name Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl LX headliner, also spoke to the press about the lineup. “Bad Bunny doesn’t appeal to a broad audience,” Johnson said. “The Super Bowl has a wide viewership, including young, impressionable fans. I think a role model like Lee Greenwood is a better fit.”

Johnson’s tweet about the “terrible decision” to name Bad Bunny caused a stir when the Latin pop star was announced last month as the 2026 show’s headliner. Bad Bunny’s manager has yet to comment on the controversy.

The musician was tapped after rumors that Taylor Swift might perform at the championship game, but the choice has sparked debate online. Bad Bunny laughed off criticism on Saturday Night Live, joking that “even Fox News is happy.” He told the audience that everyone seems excited about the performance, “Even Fox News!”

Not all of the pop‑culture sphere agrees with Bad Bunny’s selection. Danica Patrick tweeted that the artist should “not be allowed” to headline the NFL’s show. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez praised the choice on “Today,” saying, “People will be pleasantly surprised because his music transcends language. I’m super excited for people to see him.”

Greenwood’s involvement could change the picture. If he does perform, he would bring decades of experience playing for NFL teams and a patriotic image that contrasts sharply with Bad Bunny’s global pop vibe. Whether the event ends up featuring the country legend or the Latin superstar, the Super Bowl 2026 halftime show is already generating buzz and conversation across music and sports fans.
