India is on track to turn into a $5 trillion economy by 2027 and to be a fully developed nation by 2047, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari told a large audience in New Delhi on Thursday. He highlighted how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has sparked rapid progress across the country.
At the 120th annual session of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) in Bharat Mandapam, Gadkari spoke about the three pillars that should guide growth: ethics, economy and ecology. “Growth can’t rely on money alone,” he said. “It must protect the environment and build a value‑based society.”
The minister praised India’s booming infrastructure. He pointed out the country’s transformation of its automobile sector—from the seventh‑largest exporter in 2014 to the third‑largest in the world, surpassing Japan—now worth more than ₹22 lakh crore in turnover. Gadkari added that the future of the industry lies in biofuels such as ethanol, methanol, biodiesel, LNG and hydrogen.
Gadkari also explained how government initiatives are adding value to agriculture. He said turning maize into ethanol has boosted farmer incomes and injected over ₹45 000 crore into rural economies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. “When farmers earn more, the whole rural economy strengthens,” he noted.
In a separate session, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan echoed the need to keep the economy ethical and sustainable. He said nearly 46 percent of India’s population works in agriculture and that the government is focused on becoming self‑reliant—or “Atmanirbharta”—in food production and farmer welfare.
Chouhan stressed that food security and farmer prosperity must go together. “We want farmers who feed the nation and also earn a dignified income,” he said. To achieve this, he called for higher per‑hectare productivity, better seed quality through the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and faster mechanisation for small and marginal farmers.
His message extended beyond just rice and wheat. India now produces surplus rice and wheat but aims next for self‑reliance in pulses and oilseeds, while safeguarding nutrition security for all.
The event underscored the India government’s commitment to growth that is inclusive, eco‑friendly and ethically grounded.
