Jairam Ramesh slams PM Modi for “unqualified praise” of Israeli PM

New Delhi, India – October 9 () – In a sharp move, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for publicly praising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after India’s agreement on the first phase of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan. Ramesh called Modi’s praise “shocking, shameful and morally atrocious” and accused Netanyahu of “unleashing a genocide” in Gaza over the past 20 months.

On the social‑media platform X, Ramesh wrote that Modi’s silence on a future independent, sovereign state of Palestine is unacceptable. “India recognized Palestine back in 1988 and now it is recognized by more than 150 countries,” the Congress leader added. He also noted Modi did not comment on the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Ramesh’s post comes after Modi welcomed the first‑phase deal, saying it reflected the strong leadership of his Israeli counterpart. Modi expressed hope that the release of hostages and increased humanitarian aid to Gaza would lead to lasting peace.

“The release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite and pave the way for lasting peace,” Modi tweeted, adding that approval from the Israeli government would bring its “precious kidnapped people home.”

Qatar’s Prime Minister and foreign‑affairs spokesperson Majed Al Ansari also posted on X that the first‑phase Gaza ceasefire agreement was reached, covering hostages, Palestinian prisoners and aid. He said the details would be announced later.

Israeli officials echoed the positive tone. Netanyahu announced a “great day for Israel,” promising a government session to approve the agreement and thanking the U.S. president and his team for supporting the mission to free kidnapped people. Hamas released a statement after Trump announced the agreement, calling it an opportunity to end the war, withdraw occupation forces, bring in aid and hold a prisoner exchange. The group urged the U.S., Arab mediators and other international parties to ensure Israel fully implements the deal without delay.

The dispute over Gaza and Palestine continues to be a hot topic on the global stage. With Modi’s enthusiastic praise for Netanyahu, Congress is pushing for a more balanced stance on the Palestinian right to statehood and urging India to address the human cost of settlement expansion. The international community, from Qatar to the U.S., remains focused on the next steps of the ceasefire and whether the peace plan can bring long‑term stability to the region.
