In Mysuru, Karnataka, police discovered the body of a teenage girl who worked as a balloon‑seller on Thursday morning. The girl, who had arrived with her family from the Kalaburagi region for the post‑Dusshera festival season, was found lying nude about 50 metres from her family’s tent, near the Doddakere grounds in front of Mysuru Palace.
The police say the victim was first sexually assaulted and then killed. CCTV footage from the area helped investigators track the suspect’s movements. A manhunt is now underway, and authorities have identified the accused. He is a former prisoner, having spent two years in jail, and is known to have a history of alcohol abuse.
Local police also questioned members of 50 Hakki‑Pikki tribal families who live close to the parade grounds. The victim’s family believes the crime involved rape and murder, and are seeking answers.
The tragedy unfolded after the girl had sold balloons at the Chamundeshwari Teppotsava religious event on Wednesday night, where she had slept with her parents. By Thursday morning, her parents could not locate her and discovered the body approximately 50 metres away from their temporary shelter.
Police officials say more details are still emerging, but the investigation is being treated with high urgency. The discovery came after a series of violent incidents in Karnataka last month, including the arrest of a woman in Bidar who died pushing her six‑year‑old stepdaughter off a three‑storey building in August. That case was revealed over a month later when CCTV footage was found.
The police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
