The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has just issued an open‑call for non‑teaching staff positions in state schools. The commission announced 2,989 vacancies for Group‑C jobs and 5,488 for Group‑D roles. Applications will be accepted from 3 November to 3 December, and all candidates must register online through the WBSSC portal.

The fee is Rs 400 for general category applicants, while those from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and differently‑abled categories will pay Rs 150. Applicants who are marked as tainted or ineligible will be barred from taking the exam. The WBSSC says the fresh test will start after a Supreme Court ruling that cancelled the hiring of around 26,000 teachers and staff who were recruited through a 2016 scheme that was exposed as corrupt.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu, who highlighted the notification on his X page, called the new recruitment a milestone for job‑seeking youth in West Bengal. “This is another step taken by the School Education Department under the guidance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to create employment for young people,” he wrote.

Last month, the commission held a State Level Selection Test (SLST) in two rounds to fill 35,726 teaching posts for classes 9 to 12 – 23,212 for grades 9‑10 and 12,514 for grades 11‑12. Those exams were conducted after a long gap, but they came under scrutiny following allegations of bribery and manipulation of OMR sheets that led to a major “teacher recruitment scam” in the state.

Former education minister Partha Chatterjee, MLA Jiban Krishna Saha and several department officials were arrested by central agencies. The Supreme Court’s April 3 decision voided the appointments made under the tainted 2016 process and barred those candidates from the new exam. In line with that order, the commission released a list on 30 August of 1,806 tainted candidates who had secured teaching jobs through the corruption.

Candidates who want a stable teaching or non‑teaching job in West Bengal should register early, pay the applicable fee, and prepare for the upcoming exam. The WBSSC’s official site will have the detailed application form, eligibility criteria, and exam schedule in the coming days.
