Mumbai, India – Anupam Kher, the veteran actor with more than four decades of work behind him, has taken on a wide range of roles that test the limits of a performer’s craft. In recent interviews, Kher highlighted two of the toughest characters he has played: Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also hinted at an upcoming film that will feature him as the celebrated poet Rabindranath Tagore.
#### A career of extremes
Kher’s filmography reads like a walk through Indian cinema’s history. From small indie projects to big‑budget blockbusters, he has never shied away from a challenge. “When you’ve been in the business long enough, you find a character that pushes you beyond your comfort zone,” he told . “Mahātmā Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh were that push.”
#### Portraying a living legend
Kher described playing Dr Manmohan Singh as the hardest part of the trio. The former prime minister is a contemporary figure, constantly in the news and on television. “He has a very mild way of moving and speaking,” Kher said. “Recreating that was a tightrope walk.” He spent five to six months shadowing Singh’s mannerisms, studying how he sits, walks, and climbs stairs. The research even led to a viral video when a crew member filmed Kher practicing stair climbing in an English countryside house.
To test his transformation, Kher called a friend in the voice of Singh. “My Delhi friend thought the former prime minister was on the line,” he laughed. “That was my real test.”
#### Flying back in time
Opposite the contemporary challenge, Kher found more material when taking on the roles of Mahātmā Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. “We have plenty of archival footage, photographs, and films to capture their essence,” he explained. “Their personalities belong to a bygone era, mostly recorded in black and white. Those references anchor the performance.”
#### Tagore and more
Kher’s upcoming movie about Tagore will give fans another glimpse of his versatility. While the film has not yet hit theaters, he has already posted a photo collage on Instagram showing how he will portray the poet, alongside Gandhi and Singh. His caption, “Three characters – one actor! Sometimes you keep making yourself and others realize your worth! Sounds good! All hail,” captured the pride he feels in his craft.
#### A legacy at the screen
Kher played Manmohan Singh in “The Accidental Prime Minister” (2019) and recently portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in Vivek Agnihotri’s “The Bengal Files.” His ability to inhabit such distinct personalities cements his place as one of India’s most celebrated actors.
Whether stepping into the shoes of a freedom fighter or a modern political figure, Anupam Kher continues to challenge himself and entertain audiences worldwide.
