Madurai welcomed former India captain M.S. Dhoni on Thursday for a big celebration.
Dhoni landed in the city on a private jet from Mumbai and was the chief guest at the opening of the Velammal Cricket Stadium in Chintamani. The new arena, built by the Velammal Education Trust and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, is Tamil Nadu’s second‑largest cricket ground. It covers 12.5 acres and cost more than ₹300 crore.
The event drew huge crowds. Fans had been gathered at the airport all day, eager to see the country’s most beloved cricketer. Dhoni’s arrival was handled with tight security, and he was driven to the stadium in a white car that bore his iconic jersey number “7”. After the cut‑the‑tape ceremony, he returned to the airport in a blue car, also numbered “7”, and flew back to Mumbai that evening.
The Velammal Stadium can seat 7,300 people now and plans to increase its capacity to 20,000 in the future. It is set to become a key hub for cricket matches across the region.
In a related story, Dhoni recently completed drone‑pilot training at Garuda Aerospace, a DGCA‑approved training centre in Chennai. He passed the course and is now a certified drone pilot. Social media erupted with praise as fans celebrated his new skill, highlighting the mix of sports and technology in his life.
The inauguration and Dhoni’s new certification both underscore how the former captain continues to inspire across generations, linking the excitement of cricket with the future of aviation technology.
