In Guwahati, Assam, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader Numal Momin announced plans to set up a Zubeen Garg Memorial Trust. The trust will channel donations to help the poor, widows, orphans, marginalised groups and students, keeping the late singer’s legacy alive through social good.

The beloved singer died in Singapore on September 19, the day before a planned performance at the Northeast India Festival. His remains were flown to Delhi and then to Guwahati on September 21.

Speaking to , Momin urged the creation of the trust. “We should use the money to benefit poor people, orphanages, widows, and those who are neglected,” he said. “Support students with scholarships, help elderly men and women left by families, and keep Zubeen’s memory alive by giving back to the community.” Momin added that the trust should be open and fair and that all 3.4 million residents of Assam should be able to join.

Momin called Zubeen’s early death a huge loss for Assam and for music lovers across India. He praised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for taking the matter seriously. The CM has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) monitored by a retired judge and an investigation sitting judge. The SIT has already arrested five people connected to the case, including event organiser Shyamku Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddhant Sharma, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and co‑singer Amritprava Mahanta.

If the SIT and other agencies cannot solve the case, the CM has promised to refer it to the CBI to ensure justice. Momin said that the investigation will eventually reveal the true cause of death and honour everyone’s memory of Zubeen’s iconic voice.
