In New Delhi, India welcomed ambassadors, high commissioners and other diplomatic staff for a reception hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The event was led by Ambassador Sibi George, Secretary (West), who introduced Professor Bimal N Patel as India’s candidate for a judge seat at the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Patel will be considered for the 2026‑2035 term.
The meeting brought together diplomats from all United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) member states. George used the opportunity to stress India’s pledge to keep the world’s seas “free, fair, transparent and rules‑based.” He reminded attendees that India remains committed to upholding international maritime law and supporting global cooperation at sea.
Professor Patel is a respected legal scholar with deep expertise in maritime law. He currently serves on the International Law Commission and is the vice‑chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University in Gujarat. His work has influenced many national and international legal frameworks, and his nomination reflects India’s aspiration to play a leading role in shaping ocean governance.
During the reception, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also highlighted Patel’s achievements. The posting on the social‑media platform X captured the event’s key moments, noting that the gathering underscored India’s dedication to a rules‑based maritime order and showcased Patel as a strong candidate for the ITLOS judgeship.
