Tamil Nadu: Puthiya Thalaimurai office recieves bomb threat, ruled a hoax

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – A bomb threat sent via e‑mail to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police office last night prompted a swift emergency response. The anonymous message warned that an explosive was planted inside the Puthiya Thalaimurai office in Ekkatuthangal, a suburb of the state capital.

Police acted quickly. Officers rushed to the site, cleared the building and used metal detectors and sniff‑dog teams to search for any hidden devices. The search, which stretched over an hour and a half into the early hours of the morning, turned up nothing. The authorities later confirmed that the threat was a hoax and said they were already trying to trace the sender.

The incident follows a similar scare at the Chennai Airport earlier this month. On October 3, an email arrived at the airport’s management office. It claimed that powerful bombs had been hidden in garbage bins at the airport and would detonate. The alert sent the airport officials into action: a security meeting was called immediately, involving the airport director, senior airport staff, the Chief Institute of Civil Aviation Security (CICAS), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers, airline representatives, and airport police.

The airport was put into a full security lockdown. Bomb disposal squads with sniffer dogs swept the terminal, the gates, the baggage handling area, and the entire perimeter. All vehicles were stopped and inspected. Passengers were made to go through extra checks before boarding flights. Even the garbage bins, parcels loaded onto flights, and passenger baggage were examined. The search ran from midnight until dawn, but no bombs or suspicious materials were found.

Police are now working to identify the individual or group behind both email threats. The incidents highlight the heightened security measures in Chennai and show how quickly authorities can mobilise to protect the public when a bomb threat is received.
