Maha govt inks MoU with Spanish agency to develop convention centre at Nagpur
Mumbai – On Friday, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) and the Spanish trade‑fair group Fira Barcelona International signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build a world‑class exhibition, convention, cultural and academic centre in Nagpur.
The ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Spanish Ambassador to India Juan Antonio, and Fira Barcelona International chief executive Ricard Zapatero, among other officials.
Fadnavis urged that the Nagpur site must be well connected by road, rail and air. He said the centre should host not only trade shows and business events but also cultural programmes that showcase Nagpur’s history. “It should be an attractive, high‑tech, eco‑friendly landmark that tells everyone who visits what Nagpur is all about,” he said.
The Spanish ambassador highlighted the strong ties between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spain’s Pedro Sánchez, saying the partnership will help bring modern technology and artificial intelligence to India’s everyday life. He praised Mumbai as a rising powerhouse of South Asia and said Spain is keen to collaborate with Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai.
Earlier in the week, Fadnavis spoke at the “Global Fintech Fest 2025,” emphasizing Maharashtra’s focus on clear vision, fast decision‑making and timely execution. He noted that projects such as the Mumbai Trans‑Harbour Link, long pending, were accelerated by the state’s “Infrastructure War Room.” He also pointed out that the first phase of the Mumbai Metro, which took six years just to plan, reached the tender stage in 11 months.
The new convention centre project aims to boost Nagpur’s profile as a major exhibition hub while blending modern design with environmental sustainability.
