On October 10, Congress MP Varun Chaudhry talked to reporters in Chandigarh about the shocking death of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who is alleged to have taken his own life. The MP presented three clear demands to move the investigation forward and protect the officer’s family.
- Names in the FIR – Chaudhry wants the names of the two main suspects, Haryana’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya, to appear in the first information report (FIR).
- High‑court supervision – He stresses that a sitting High Court judge should chair the inquiry, ensuring it is fair and transparent.
- Family security – Chaudhry demands police protection for the widowed wife and children of the late IPS officer.
The MP criticised the delay in naming the senior officers in the FIR and urged the Chandigarh administration to act openly so justice can be served.
Chandigarh Police Special Investigation Team (SIT)
To probe the allegations, the Chandigarh Police set up a six‑member SIT led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pushpendra Kumar. The team will examine the case registered at Police Station Sector‑11 (West) under:
- Section 108 & 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – related to suicide and abetment;
- Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 – covering caste‑based harassment.
The SIT roster:
- IGP Pushpendra Kumar (Chief)
- SSP Kanwardeep Kaur
- SPICity KM Priyanka
- DSP Traffic Charanyit Singh Vik
- SOPO South Qujt Kaur
- SHO PS‑11 (West) Jarveer Singh Rana
The group may bring in additional experts to speed evidence collection, witness interviews, and report preparation.
FIR Filed Against DGP and SP
The Chandigarh Police have also filed an FIR against DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and SP Narendra Bijarniya after a complaint by IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar—wife of the officer who died at his Chandigarh home on October 7. The FIR, lodged under the same sections of the BNS and the Prevention of Atrocities Act, accuses the officials of abetting suicide and caste‑based harassment.
The case is still in early stages, but the demands of MP Chaudhry and the SIT’s efforts aim to bring clarity and accountability to Y Puran Kumar’s tragic death.
