A teacher at a well‑known missionary‑run school in Kolkata was stopped by police Friday after officers noticed he was walking with a bag that contained an air pistol. The man, Debanjan Chattopadhyay, was taken to the Kalighat police station where officers questioned him for about five hours.

Police officials said they became suspicious of his movements on the street. When they searched his bag, they found the air pistol. Once Chattopadhyay produced documents showing that he had a valid license from the Sreerampore Shooting Club in Hooghly district, the police accepted his explanation. They released him because he had no criminal intent and his possession of the pistol was legal.

During the interview, Chattopadhyay told reporters that the officers treated him politely. The city police also confirmed that this incident did not jeopardise the Chief Minister’s security.

For context, a youth was caught with a weapon near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat last year, just before she had to leave for a Trinamool Congress rally. The city police said that event was unrelated to any security breach.

The case highlights how police in Kolkata respond to weapons found on the street, balancing law‑enforcement duties with public safety and respecting lawful ownership.
