Former Muzaffarpur MP Ajay Nishad brought himself back into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday, a move that could shape the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.
The party welcomed him, along with his wife Rama Nishad, at the BJP headquarters in Patna. State President Dilip Jaiswal handed over the membership card, marking the official return.
Ajay Nishad has long been a key player in Muzaffarpur politics. He won the city’s parliamentary seat twice—first in 2014 and again in 2019—running on a BJP ticket. After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP did not give him a ticket, prompting him to switch to the Indian National Congress. He contested Muzaffarpur again but lost by 234,000 votes to BJP’s Rajbhushan Nishad.
Rajbhushan’s victory and his new role as Minister of State in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet seem to have strengthened the link between Ajay Nishad and the BJP, leading to his return. Ajay’s father, veteran politician Jai Narayan Prasad Nishad, served as a three‑time MP from Muzaffarpur and held a central ministerial post, underscoring the family’s deep ties to the region’s politics.
With the state assembly polls looming, insiders speculate that the BJP might field Ajay or Rama Nishad from the Kudani constituency in Muzaffarpur. The party sees his comeback as a strategic step to consolidate votes from the Nishad community and secure a foothold in the area.
Ajay Nishad’s re‑entry fits into a larger pattern of political realignments across Bihar. Earlier this year, four leaders from the Janata Dal (United), including former Purnea MP Santosh Kushwaha, joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Other notable moves include former JDU MLA Rahul Sharma and Chanakya Prakash, son of the sitting JDU MP from Banka, both aligning with the RJD.
These shifts hint at a highly competitive environment as parties shuffle alliances and candidates ahead of the 2025 election cycle.
