Gauhati University in Assam has launched a strong response to fresh claims it says are false and aimed at harming the campus’s reputation. The university’s press release, issued on October 10, tackles rumours that the Vice Chancellor and top administrators were involved in shady project allocations and financial mismanagement.

“We’re aware that both print and online outlets have spread unverified allegations against our administration,” the statement reads. “These accusations are baseless, misleading and downright defamatory.” University officials stress that all decisions, from budgeting to procurement, follow strict legal guidelines set out in the Gauhati University Act of 1947 and the Government of Assam’s rules.

Financial accountability is a cornerstone of the campus. Audits are performed by India’s Comptroller and Auditor General, and every expenditure must pass through the Finance Committee, Executive Council, and University Court. Once a budget is approved, a detailed approval chain—administrative clearance, financial sanction, and purchase order—keeps the process transparent.

Gauhati University also relies on public procurement platforms. All material and service purchases go through the Government e‑Marketplace (GeM) and the Assam Tender Portal, using university‑approved rate contracts. Major projects use e‑tendering on the Assam e‑Procurement Portal and are advertised in leading newspapers to guarantee fair competition. Construction decisions follow the university’s Construction Committee guidelines.

“We’ve got robust safeguards in place,” said Dr. Utpal Sarma, the university’s registrar. “Every financial or administrative move undergoes rigorous checks.” He added that the recent smear attacks on the Vice Chancellor appear politically motivated and are born from frustration rather than fact.

Legal action is already underway. The university said it would pursue appropriate court steps against the individual or group spreading the false narratives. Meanwhile, Gauhati University urges students, staff, and the public to rely on official announcements instead of rumours.

The university’s spokesperson echoed a message of reassurance. “We remain committed to academic excellence, research leadership, and ethical governance,” he said. “Our mission to foster knowledge and innovation remains undaunted by these baseless claims.”

In summary, Gauhati University insists that its administrative and financial operations are fully above board, compliant with state and national regulations, and transparent to the public. Any future allegations will be met with decisive legal and institutional action, and the campus will continue its work on a foundation of integrity and compliance.
