Nine‑time Olympic champion Carl Lewis voiced strong support for India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. In an interview with ’s Indian news site, Lewis praised the country’s growing economy, massive population, and worldwide enthusiasm for sports.

India officially filed a Letter of Intent with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last October, led by Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha. The bid highlights how hosting the Games could boost infrastructure, spark global unity, and deliver a lasting legacy for Indian athletics and youth programs.

Lewis said, “India’s approach to the bid shows they’re looking for a country that wants to host, not just a place that sponsors the event. Their economy is expanding, their size supports a massive stadium complex, and the people will love it.” He added that the event would “bring tremendous attention to sport, make new roads, and raise the next generation’s passion for the Games.” The former world record‑holder forecast a jump in investment after the 2036 Olympics, encouraging athletes like Neeraj Chopra to stay focused on personal progress.

While speaking to , Lewis offered insight to Indian jumping star Neeraj Chopra, who recently fell to eighth place at the World Athletics Championships after a 26‑event streak of top‑two finishes. “Being number one isn’t about beating others; it’s about beating yourself,” Lewis advised. “Practice daily, ask each day if you’re better than you were yesterday. The key is to keep improving, not just to win the gold.”

Lewis also turned his attention to charity, walking the runway at New Delhi’s Le Meridian Hotel for the Delhi Half Marathon fundraiser. “I love India’s culture and food. The weather is great and the event feels unique,” he said. “It’s an incredible moment that I’ll remember.”

The Delhi Half Marathon will begin on 12 October 2025 from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and will wind through landmarks such as Lodhi Gardens and India Gate, giving runners a scenic journey around the capital.

Carl Lewis’s legacy continues to inspire athletes worldwide. From 1984 to 1996 he competed in four Olympic Games, collecting nine gold medals – the most by any modern track and field athlete. His endorsement of India’s 2036 bid underscores the global significance of hosting the Olympic Games and the powerful ripple effect it can create across sports and communities.
