Former India captain and legendary spinner Anil Kumble said yesterday that opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is ready to smash a triple‑hundred in the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Jaiswal stole the show on Day 1. He batted all day and finished on 173 not out, smashing 22 fours in 253 balls. After India chose to bat, Jaiswal kept a tight eye on the West Indies bowlers’ movement and stayed calm. In the second session he pushed hard, reaching his fifty in just 82 deliveries. He added another 50 in only 63 balls, marking his seventh Test century. By the end of the day he was past 150 and looked set for a third double‑hundred as play resumed on Day 2.
Kumble praised Jaiswal’s hunger and determination. “He never wastes a chance,” the former captain said on JioHotstar. “When he gets a chance, he makes it count for the team.” The young opener had a rough start in the opening Test in Ahmedabad but bounced back with a 150‑plus score in Jaipur, making him the second‑highest‑scoring teenager in Test history – only behind Don Bradman.
With the pitch still batting‑friendly, Kumble urged Jaiswal to go beyond a double‑ton. “He can finish with a triple century,” Kumble said. “That would make him only the third Indian to reach that landmark.”
The team’s strategy is clear: bat as long as possible and pile on runs. Shubman Gill said at the toss that “we want to pile on the runs.” Jaiswal now has a chance to make history: a triple‑hundred tomorrow would bring him three Test centuries and cement his place among India’s greats. ()
