Maharashtra Minister Bawankule hits back at Sanjay Raut amid flood situation in Marathwada

On Saturday, Mumbai‑based MP Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) slammed the Maharashtra government for what he said was a poor response to the floods that continue to batter the Marathwada region.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule, a minister in the Devendra Fadnavis ministry, fired back, insisting that the state government was fully committed to helping Marathwada. He urged reporters to remember that the Fadnavis cabinet has renamed key cities—Aurangabad is now Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar has become Ahilyanagar—to honor local leaders rather than re‑embrace the old Nizam legacy. In his view, the “Nizam‑like” accusations were actually a jab at the former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Bawankule added that the state administration had taken concrete steps, such as declaring a special relief package, to deal with the damage. He noted that the government was also keen on welcoming the visiting British prime minister and hoped that Modi would announce further aid for Marathwada’s flood‑hit farmers.

Raut, however, slammed the government for paying more attention to foreign visits than to the people suffering from the floods. He demanded compensation of ₹50,000 per hectare for farmland wiped out by the floods, warning that the damage would affect farming for years to come.

He also announced a new “Marathwada Morcha” organised by Shiv Sena (UBT) and said that Uddhav Thackeray would head the effort. Raut urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to channel support for the farmers through the PM Cares Fund, suggesting that without timely aid the suicide rate among affected farmers could soar.

The MP claimed that Marathwada still feels the legacy of the Nizam’s rule, with continued hardships and exploitation. He called on all political leaders to act quickly to lift the region from its crisis.
