Nonkululeko Mlaba reprimanded for gesture towards Harleen Deol in Women’s Cricket World Cup

In the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match in Visakhapatnam, South Africa’s left‑arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was slapped with a formal reprimand after an off‑hand gesture at India’s batter Harleen Deol.
Mlaba was found to be in breach of Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The rule says players may not use language, actions or gestures that could insult or provoke a batter, especially after dismissal. The incident happened right after Mlaba got Deol out in the 17th over – she waved a hand at the Indian batter in a manner that the ICC deemed inappropriate.
The disciplinary panel handed Mlaba a single demerit point and a written warning. It was her first offence in 24 months. The warning flags that future infractions could be more severe.
On the field, Mlaba has made a big impact. She has already taken six wickets from three matches in the tournament, including a 2/46 spell that helped South Africa pick up a thrilling three‑wicket win over India.
That Victory was the 10th encounter of the Women’s World Cup. South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt led a player‑powered attack, while batter Nadine de Klerk smashed a majestic half‑century to help the Proteas chase a target of 252. The chase finished in the penultimate over, turning a collapsed first‑innings stand into a dramatic win.
The defeat was a setback for India, who now sit outside the top four streak. South Africa sits in the top four next to Australia, England and India, and will take a four‑day break before their next match against Bangladesh in Visakhapatnam.
