New Delhi’s busiest train hub just got a facelift. At New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), a brand‑new passenger lounge called the Yatri Suvidha Kendra has opened to smooth out the flow of travelers. The centre is split into three zones—Ticketing (2,860 sqm), Post‑Ticketing (1,150 sqm) and Pre‑Ticketing (1,218 sqm)—to keep crowds moving and reduce bottlenecks at the main entrance.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw toured the building on Saturday. The facility can host about 7,000 passengers at once, a huge boost for comfort during the festival season when trains are packed. Vaishnaw said the Kendra will be replicated at other stations across the country, aiming to deliver the same level of convenience nationwide.
Inside, travelers will find 22 ticketing counters and 25 Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs). The lounge seats 200 people and is cooled by 18 High‑Volume Low‑Speed (HVLS) fans. A dedicated toilet block covers 652 sqm and an RO water system keeps passengers hydrated. The centre also features a robust announcement system with 24 speakers, three LED train‑info displays and seven modern fire‑fighting units for safety.
Security is top priority. The Kendra is equipped with 18 CCTV cameras, five luggage scanners, and five Door‑Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs). All of this was installed while the site still handled daily train operations—a testament to Northern Railway’s careful planning.
The upgrade also included extending Foot Over Bridge 1 (FOB 1). Passengers getting off at NDLS can now leave directly toward the metro station, improving multi‑modal connectivity and easing platform crowding.
Northern Railway’s senior officials—Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board Satish Kumar, General Manager Northern Railway Ashok Kumar Verma and others—briefed the minister on the planning and execution of the new Kendra. This major upgrade signals a renewed focus on passenger comfort and safety at India’s key rail hubs.
