“What’s wrong with that… Indian Constitution guarantees religious freedom”: Owaisi on ‘I Love Muhammad’ row

Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), slammed the Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday over the “I Love Muhammad” poster controversy. He said praising the Prophet is a matter of faith and asked why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was objecting to it. Owaisi also demanded that those arrested in connection with the protest be released.

The row began when a group of people gathered outside the Ala Hazrat Dargah and the residence of IMC chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, holding placards that read “I Love Muhammad.” Protestors threw stones at the police after Friday prayers, prompting the Uttar Pradesh police to arrest Maulana Mohsin Raza over the September 26 Bareilly protest. Owaisi said no violence was linked to the posters, arguing that displaying religious devotion is protected by Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

Speaking to , Owaisi compared the situation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2018 promotion of a poster of Lord Hanuman—an act that drew no criticism. He criticized the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for claiming that India has only one religion, insisting that the Constitution declares India a secular nation that respects all faiths. The AIMIM leader urged the UP government to lift the detentions, saying the policy sends a negative message both domestically and internationally.
