Hallmark star Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe, 44, reveals stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis as she vows to ‘persevere’

Crystal Lowe, best known for her role as Rita Haywith in Hallmark’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” series, made a personal cease‑fire announcement about her health on Friday. The 44‑year‑old actress revealed she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, a fact she shared in a candid essay for People magazine.

Lowe said that the cancer diagnosis forced her to confront a long‑standing struggle with her body. She recalls how early in her career she modeled for magazines like Maxim and played roles that centered on her appearance. “It was a quiet battle, fought daily,” she wrote. “For the first time I was being seen for my craft, but the mirror still calls me.”

In February, a “L Word” alum found a large mass in her right breast. Initial tests—mammograms and a guided ultrasound—turned up nothing. A month later, the mass was still present and had changed in size and positioning. When a doctor performed a biopsy and declared it likely cancer, Lowe explains she was stunned but knew she had to act.

Three days later, her GP called with the official diagnosis: invasive ductal carcinoma in one of her breast ducts. Lowe said she was devastated and that it took a while to process before her husband, Miko Tomasevich, gave her space.

She is now facing a treatment plan that includes chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, radiation, and eventual reconstruction. “I’ve never had any major illness before. It’s a lot to digest,” she added. The Hallmark family and her fans have rallied around her, offering support and encouragement.

Before chemotherapy began, Lowe decided to frame the battle positively. She gave her chemotherapy regimen a “Scottish warrior” nickname, calling it Agnes McDonald, a name she chose because it evoked a fierce, warrior spirit. “I put on the Braveheart soundtrack and felt strong for the first time since my diagnosis,” she told her readers. The visual and music helped her see herself as a warrior fighting “Barry,” her nickname for the cancer.

Throughout her essay, Lowe urged women to get regular mammograms and to be vigilant about changes in their bodies. She posted a message on Instagram encouraging her followers to schedule check‑ups and to spread the word.

Her message drew an outpouring of support from Hallmark colleagues. Nikki DeLoach, Janel Parrish, Lacey Chabert, and Tamera Mowry all left encouraging comments in the post. “Sending you all the love and prayers,” DeLoach wrote. “Your strength inspires us all.”

Lowe closed her essay by saying that while the journey has been frightening and humbling, she remains determined to survive and to turn the experience into growth. “I promise to persevere,” she wrote. “To grow.”

The actress continues her fight while using her platform to raise awareness. Her story is a reminder that regular screenings can make the difference between early detection and a life‑changing diagnosis.
