Haryana Congress calls for statewide protests over IPS officer’s suicide

In a dramatic move, the Haryana Congress on Saturday urged workers across every district to hold protests within the next two days. The call follows the tragic suicide of senior Indian Police Service officer Y Puran Kumar and aims to spotlight what the party says is rising harassment and anti‑Dalit sentiment under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government.

Rao Narender Singh, president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC), said the incident shows “systemic insensitivity” and demands justice for Kumar’s family. Singh pointed to a growing trend of violence against Dalits since the BJP came to power locally and nationally. He warned that a high‑ranking officer cannot be shunned for the class of his background.

In an official letter to party workers, the HPCC stated that since the BJP took office, atrocities against all sections of society – especially Dalits – have risen sharply. The letter claims that Kumar, a respected and honest IPS officer, was pushed to a breaking point by sustained harassment, forcing him to take his own life.

“The Constitution guarantees every citizen, regardless of their status, the right to justice and equality,” Singh wrote. “Under the BJP, the law is being denied on the basis of social class, and that is unacceptable.”

He questioned whether a person from a marginalized community can be denied justice simply because of their background, even if they have earned their position through hard work and merit. The letter emphasized that Kumar’s death is not just a personal tragedy but a “reflection of the insensitivity of the entire system.”

To ensure justice for Kumar’s family and expose what Singh sees as the BJP’s anti‑Dalit mindset, he urged Congress workers to organize “strong protest demonstrations” at district headquarters across Haryana in the coming days.

The party’s message is clear: the Chandigarh‑based Congress hates the BJP’s alleged harassment of law‑enforcement officials and wants visible resistance from grassroots workers to demand justice.
