Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh – An accused in a teenage girl’s gangrape case in Banthra was hurt during a clash with police, while a second suspect was arrested, police said on Friday.

The police were alerted Saturday night after the father of the victim filed an FIR at 5 p.m. The complaint names two men as accused. When officers tried to stop them at Harauni Railway Station late last night, the men fled on motorbikes and fired at police. Police opened fire in response and one of the men, Lalit Kashyap, was injured and taken to a hospital. A third person escaped the scene and police are still looking for him.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nipun Agrawal said the incident has shocked the city and that investigators are working hard to secure the suspects’ identities. He confirmed that a third accused was detained earlier this week.

The case highlights the ongoing challenge of sexual violence in Uttar Pradesh and the need for swift law‑enforcement action.
