PM Modi congratulates Patrick Herminie on winning Seychelles presidential election

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the new president of Seychelles, Dr. Patrick Herminie, with a warm message on X. He said congratulations to Herminie and expressed confidence that the long‑standing ties between India and the island nation will grow even stronger.
Modi added that the Indian Ocean is a shared heritage that fuels the hopes of both peoples. He looked forward to working closely with Seychelles’ new government to boost cooperation in trade, maritime security, tourism and technology.
Herminie won the presidential election after a tight runoff, beating the incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan. Official results showed 52.7 % of the vote for Herminie and 47.3 % for Ramkalawan. The United Seychelles party, which governed from 1977 to 2020 before being ousted in 2020, returned to power after four years in opposition.
Seychelles gained independence in 1976. India celebrated its freedom by sending a naval ship, the INS Nilgiri, to participate in the ceremonies. India opened a mission in Victoria in 1979, and the country’s first resident High Commissioner was appointed in 1987. Seychelles set up its own mission in New Delhi in 2008.
The election was held in a two‑day voting period, with most voters casting ballots on Saturday. The fresh leadership and renewed diplomatic links are expected to deepen cooperation across sectors and reinforce the friendly relationship rooted in the shared Indian Ocean basin.
