Madurai, Tamil Nadu – BJP politician K Annamalai has blasted the state government for how it’s dealing with a troubling drug‑safety case linked to a private company in Kanchipuram. The company’s medicine is blamed for 23 deaths in Madhya Pradesh and the deaths of three young children in Rajasthan.
Annamalai says Tamil Nadu’s reaction is weak. After a Special Investigation Team (SIT) stepped in, the state only suspended two drug inspectors. He accuses the government of making a “false front, pretending it’s not involved or responsible.”
The issue centers on a batch of Coldrif cough syrup that many consumers identified as dangerous. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) made a sweeping decision on Thursday: every medicine made in India must go through mandatory testing before it can be approved. DCGI officials pointed out that the Kanchipuram company has a history of quality breaches and that none of Tamil Nadu’s inspectors had actually examined the plant.
Because of the SIT’s investigation, the government finally took action against two inspectors. But the delay and limited scope of the punishment raised questions about accountability. Annamalai urges the Chief Minister and the state administration to openly admit responsibility and take stronger steps to protect the public.
On October 10, a Parasia court sent the owner of the Kanchipuram‑based firm, S Ranganathan, to 10‑day police custody over the Coldrif deaths. As the case unfolds, citizens across India will watch closely how Tamil Nadu handles the fallout and whether it can improve its drug‑inspection system.
The story highlights growing pressure on Indian regulators to tighten safety checks, especially after high‑profile drug‑death incidents involving private pharma firms.
