TN Congress chief Selvaperunthagai slams EPS for ‘third-rate politics’, reaffirms party commitment to DMK alliance

In Chennai, the Congress party’s state leader, K. Selvaperunthagai, took to the press on Sunday to criticize Edappadi Palaniswami, the former chief minister and AIADMK general secretary, over what he called “third‑rate politics.”
Speaking at a ceremony in Royapettah, Selvaperunthagai accused Palaniswami of “crying and abusing people” while touring the state, rather than listening to voters’ real concerns. “He doesn’t read the news or understand politics,” he said. “He grabs a van and travels around, speaking crudely and irresponsibly. Is that how a former chief minister should behave?”
The Congress leader also claimed that Palaniswami had handed over Tamil Nadu’s rights to the BJP‑led Union government and therefore had no right to criticize congress. “His politics have sunk to the lowest level imaginable,” Selvaperunthagai added.
He reminded the audience of former chief minister Jayalalithaa’s firm opposition to national policies like the NEET examination, GST and the UDAY power scheme, and pointed out that Palaniswami now supports those same central policies—an act he said betrays the state’s interests.
Selvaperunthagai didn’t stop there. He turned his attention to the BJP, accusing it of “systematically weakening” the Right to Information (RTI) Act over the past decade. He noted that India got transparency law 20 years ago under Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, but now many RTI appeals—over 450,000—are stalled because BJP‑ruled states have not appointed RTI commissioners.
When asked about alliances, the Tamil Nadu Congress chief reaffirmed loyalty to the DMK‑led front. “We have won five elections together as a victorious alliance and the Tamil Nadu Congress will continue to follow the direction of the AICC leadership,” he said.
He dismissed rumors of coalition rifts as personal opinions. “That’s just commentary. The Congress is united and focused on the people’s issues,” he concluded.
