Chennai – 13 Oct – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy‑rain alert for 11 districts of Tamil Nadu today. Residents in the affected areas should prepare for strong showers, thunderstorms and occasional lightning.
The IMD bulletin says moderate to heavy rain will hit not only Tamil Nadu but also nearby Puducherry and Karaikal. While the city of Chennai will see partly cloudy skies, light to moderate rain can arrive in the evening and at night, with a few thunderstorms sprinkled across the region.
Key districts under the heavy‑rain watch include Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Theni, Madurai, Dindigul, Virudhunagar and Dharmapuri. “Thunderstorms are likely over hilly and interior zones,” the IMD added, urging people in mountain belts to stay alert.
Chennai’s temperature is forecast to stay between 32 °C and 33 °C during the day, dropping to around 26 °C at night. Even with the milder temperatures, the frequent showers could push river and reservoir levels higher in vulnerable areas like the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, raising the risk of landslides or flash floods.
Farmers are advised to secure harvested crops and livestock, as rain is expected to persist intermittently over the next few days. Authorities must keep a close eye on water levels and issue timely warnings to prevent flooding damage.
The heavy rainfall stems from moisture‑laden winds and a low‑pressure trough sweeping across the southern peninsula, boosting precipitation especially in Tamil Nadu’s western and southern districts. Stay safe, stay informed, and avoid crossing water‑logged zones.
