Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 13 – A fresh round of scrutiny has hit Kerala’s political scene when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued a summons for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s son, Vivek Kiran Vijayan. The notice, now linked to the SNC Lavalin case, has pulled the state’s top leaders back into the spotlight, replacing the earlier focus on the Life Mission case.

The SNC Lavalin probe centers on alleged irregularities in modernising power generators back in 1996, when Vijayan served as Kerala’s Electricity Minister under the E.K. Nayanar government. The case remains in the Supreme Court, but the ED’s 2023 summons came as part of a wider money‑laundering investigation triggered by journalist Crime Nandakumar’s 2020 complaint, which led to a formal inquiry in 2021.

Vivek Kiran did not show up for questioning, and no further action has been recorded. This silence has fueled doubts about how the case is being handled and whether law and order are applied consistently.

Opposition voices have sharpened their criticisms. Congress leader Anil Akkara filed a complaint with the Finance Ministry and the ED director on Monday, demanding that Vivek Kiran be immediately questioned. “Despite the summons, no steps have been taken. That raises serious concerns about transparency and equal application of law,” Akkara stated.

CPI‑M officials also noted that party forums were not informed about the ED notice to the CM’s son. The Central government’s alleged use of the ED to target political rivals remains a contentious issue, with CPI‑M accusing it of political manipulation.

With local body elections slated for later this year and state assembly polls scheduled for April‑May next year, the unresolved summons has become a politically charged topic. Opposition leaders, civil society groups, and media outlets are calling for clearer accountability, as they argue that the matter undermines public trust in Kerala’s governance.
