Lucknow – On Monday, Babita Chauhan, chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission, called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the CM’s comments about banning women from going out at night following a gang‑rape at a medical college in Durgapur.

Chauhan told : “If a chief minister says girls can’t leave their homes after dark, it shows how unsafe the state is. Mamata Banerjee should order women not to leave their houses or attend school. The crime climate in West Bengal is so bad that horrific attacks can happen at any time. She must step down now.”

She added that Uttar Pradesh is different: “Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, people aren’t afraid to look at a sister or daughter with bad intentions. Law and order are solid here.” Chauhan highlighted the Women’s Commission’s work, noting that they recommend female staff at public toilets and that administration runs smoothly in her state.

In a separate statement, Banerjee stood by her earlier comments. Speaking to journalists outside Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, she said, “We have a zero‑tolerance policy against these crimes. Students from other states come to study, but we advise them not to go out at night because police can’t monitor everyone. The private medical college must also protect its students.”

She added, “If something happens after 12:30 am, we condemn it. We do not support the incident. Everyone is free to go anywhere, but hostel residents must be careful. I have asked police to take strict action—no one will be spared.”

The debate highlights growing concerns over women’s safety in India and the pressure on political leaders to address escalating crime against women.
