J&K Police seizes vehicles used for off-roading inside forest area in Budgam

Srinagar, Oct 13 – Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district seized a number of off‑road vehicles inside the protected Brainwar forest after a group of social‑media influencers was caught driving there.

The influencers filmed their stunts in the forest and shared the videos online, sparking outrage from local residents and environmental groups. The footage showed vehicles cutting through fragile forest trails, a clear breach of the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Act, which forbids any unauthorized entry or movement in this zone.

After the videos surfaced, Forest Department officials and the district administration moved quickly. They filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the participants and confiscated the vehicles shown in the videos. Authorities warned that such acts of defacing forest property and disturbing wildlife could lead to arrest and heavy fines.

Off‑roading, reckless driving, and stunt work are common traffic offences among young people in the region. In recent years, J&K authorities have taken a tougher stance, threatening to cancel driving licences, deregister vehicles, and even imprison parents who allow their children to drive. Fuel stations have also begun refusing petrol to motorcyclists who do not wear helmets.

The incident underscores the growing clash between youth trend‑setting on social media and strict environmental and traffic laws in Jammu and Kashmir. The Forest Department’s swift action sends a clear message that protected areas will no longer tolerate illegal off‑roading or reckless behavior.
