In Patna, U. P, elections in Bihar are under tight watch by state agencies. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that its enforcement teams have stepped up a crack‑down on money, liquor, drugs and freebies that might sway voters as the state nears its Assembly polls.
On Monday alone, police seized more than ₹246 crore worth of items across Bihar. The haul included ₹7.7 lakh in cash, ₹130.64 lakh in liquor, ₹68.6 lakh of narcotics, ₹20 lakh in precious metals and ₹39 lakh in freebies and other promotional goods. Since the model code of conduct went into effect, authorities have confiscated ₹78 lakh in cash, ₹1.2011 crore in liquor, ₹442 lakh in drugs, a staggering ₹278.8 crore in precious metals, and ₹514.1 lakh in freebies and other items.
The crackdown is a joint effort that involves the district administration, police, excise department, income tax, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), customs, and the Chief Minister’s Flying Squad. “We are coordinating every step to make sure the upcoming elections are free, fair and transparent,” said a government official.
The authorities are also taking strict action against anti‑social and disruptive elements. A record 260,211 preventive bonds have been issued, and 556 people were taken into custody under the National Security Act, the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, and other relevant laws. Chief Electoral Officer of Patna has urged all districts to intensify surveillance, improve inter‑agency coordination and act swiftly on any complaints.
The Election Commission’s main objective is clear: to give Bihar voters the chance to cast their ballots without pressure or temptation. In the latest update, no appeals were filed against the updated electoral rolls in the 243 assembly constituencies, meaning the rolls remain unchanged as the vote day approaches.
With these measures in place, Bihar aims to deliver one of the cleanest elections in recent history, giving voters confidence and ensuring that every vote truly counts.
