In Kalaburagi district, Karnataka, a 40‑year‑old librarian named Bhagyavati V. Aggimath took her own life on Monday, leaving a death note that blamed three months of unpaid wages and a lack of help from the state government. The incident unfolded at the Arivu Centre library in Mulakheda village, a public facility run by the Karnataka government.

Bhagyavati had worked as a librarian for six years, but her salary had gone unpaid for the last quarter. She said she was forced into this desperate step because she could not pay her household bills or cover her children’s school fees. Her family has filed a complaint that the department should be held responsible and is demanding compensation and a new job for a family member.

Police have opened a case and are investigating the circumstances of the death. The BJP has used the tragedy to criticize the Congress‑led state government. BJP state president B. Y. Vijayendra posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the governor’s refusal to pay salaries had exposed a “bankruptcy” in the government, calling the death “shameful” for civil society. He urged the government to provide immediate payment and employment to the family.

B. Y. Vijayendra also slammed senior ministers for ignoring people’s problems and focusing on politics instead of public welfare. “The state government has become unforgiveable,” he wrote, demanding immediate action to help Bhagyavati’s children.

The case highlights how unpaid wages can lead to tragic outcomes for public servants in Karnataka, and it puts pressure on the ruling party to address financial management issues in the state.
