Carrie Preston reveals why Julia Roberts was ‘mean’ to her on ‘Duplicity’ set
Julia Roberts is known for her stage‑presence, but her co‑star Carrie Preston says the Oscar winner goes even deeper into her characters on set. The 57‑year‑old actress shared a behind‑the‑scenes story from her time filming the 2009 romantic crime‑comedy “Duplicity,” where Roberts starred opposite Clive Owen.
During a tense scene, Roberts stared at Preston, who had just slept with Roberts’ onscreen boyfriend. “I was told I had to cry on cue,” Preston told the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast hosted by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “The pressure was huge, especially since I only knew the crew after a day on set.”
Preston first worked with Roberts in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” over a decade earlier. When she arrived for “Duplicity,” the red‑haired star embraced her and warned, “I’m gonna be mean to you for the rest of the day.” “I was told I wouldn’t get a friendly conversation,” Preston recalled. “That was exactly what I needed.”
The emotional moment came when Roberts silently ignored her until the cameras were ready. “I had almost no rehearsal,” Preston said. “I sat down, and Mom went… and then I started to feel this, like a surge. It was the most high‑pressure acting experience I’d had.”
Although “Duplicity” was filmed in two or three days, Roberts helped Preston nail the scene, adding crew applause that made the moment feel “cool.” “I didn’t see Julia again until the premiere,” Preston remembers. “Director Tony Gilroy introduced us, and Julia screamed, ‘We love you, Carrie!’ It felt special, like all the hard work was rewarded.”
The film reels us into a world of spies and romance, with Roberts and Owen playing rivals who fall in love, alongside Tom Wilkinson, Paul Giamatti and Denis O’Hare. Though the set may have been small, the memories it produced—especially for actors like Preston who found an unexpected mentor—last a lifetime.
