The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that a total of 4,108 federal workers have been fired through the government shutdown that began on Wednesday.

The agency said the layoffs affect employees across 20 departments, including those in the Treasury, Justice and the Department of the Interior. The firings, the agency confirmed, are part of the broader effort to adjust staffing levels after the government’s finances hit a critical gap.

“We are making difficult but necessary staffing decisions to keep services running,” a spokesperson for the administration told reporters. “These moves are temporary, but they help us manage the impact of the current budget impasse.”

The shutdown started after Congress failed to pass a new budget or a short‑term extension of funding for the federal government. As of now, 95 % of federal employees remain on the payroll, but the 4,108 workforce reductions were implemented to cut operating costs.

Government workers who lose their jobs in a shutdown normally receive a wind‑up period. They can expect to be re‑employed when funding legislation is passed, the spokesperson added.

The shutdown has already strained public services. Schools, health agencies and law‑enforcement offices in hard‑hit areas reported decreased staff, making it harder for residents to get support.

NAGC, a nonprofit that tracks federal workforce trends, noted this is the fastest firing rate in the past decade. Analysts say that the pace of layoffs could tighten budgets for upcoming fiscal year 2025.

For more details on the workers that have been laid off, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management has posted a list on its website, including job titles and Department identifiers. The federal government is hoping Congress will communicate a plan in the coming weeks.
