Second chance in playoffs for Africa’s heavyweight contenders

This year’s African boxing playoffs have taken a dramatic turn when two of the continent’s top heavyweight fighters received a second chance after originally losing their matches. The twist came after the governing body discovered a scoring error that affected the initial results.

In the first round, local legend Mahamadou Diallo of Senegal and South‑African veteran Thabo Nkosi both lost their bouts. Fans and boxers protested, arguing that the judges had miscalculated the points. After a thorough review, the African Boxing Confederation announced the matches would be replayed.

The replay will be held this weekend in Cairo, drawing top‑tier fighters from across Africa. Diallo, a former world title challenger, is looking to regain his ranking and secure a spot in the continental championship. Nkosi, 34, hopes the second chance will finally boost his career and open doors for a potential world title shot.

Promoters say the decision was made to preserve fairness and uphold the sport’s integrity. “We cannot let errors stand,” said Aiba Maadoo, the confederation’s director. “The fighters deserve a clear and honest outcome.”

Fans have taken to social media, chanting for Diallo and Nkosi, and urging supporters of other heavyweight prospects to watch the replay. If Diallo and Nkosi win, they’ll move on to face heavyweight finalists from Nigeria, Morocco, and Egypt in the semi‑finals.

The playoff’s second chance is a reminder that even in high‑stakes boxing, fairness matters. The outcomes of these replays could shape the future of African heavyweight boxing for years to come.
