CM Saha urges PM Modi for Vande Bharat from Agartala, boosting railway infrastructure

Chief Minister Manik Saha met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to push for several key projects in Tripura. Saha asked the PM to launch the Vande Bharat train between Agartala and Guwahati and to double‑lane the state’s railway tracks, aiming to improve rail links and boost economic activity.

During the meeting, Saha also urged Modi to raise the ceiling limit for Externally Aided Projects (EAPs). EAPs are government initiatives that rely on outside funding, and higher ceilings would let Tripura start more ambitious plans. Saha emphasized that many urban, tourism and municipal projects are stalled because the current EAP limit is too low.

Earlier in the week, the Chief Minister met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi to request an increase in EAP loan caps. He said the restriction hampers progress on development works across Tripura.

Saha told Modi that Tripura needs more Eklavya Model Residential Schools—he wants 15 more schools in the state—and plans to build an Agar research centre on the state’s world‑renowned Agar industry. He also asked the government to declare Unakoti a sustainable heritage site.

He asked the PM to include the Reng tribal community in the National Food Security Act and to boost wheat allocation to Tripura under the Public Distribution System. The Chief Minister highlighted the need for stronger health infrastructure and requested support for new projects.

On Tuesday, Saha met Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda. He discussed plans to set up a new medical college in Kulai, a PPP project in the northern district of Dhalai. He also asked for funds to build a tertiary ophthalmology hospital in Agartala and an immunology lab for organ transplants at Agartala Government Medical College and GB P Hospital.

The Chief Minister requested additional funding for Ayushman Bharat—Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana—to clear pending claims and to purchase advanced medical equipment for the super‑specialty block at AGMC.

Tripura currently has three medical colleges: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC). The TSMC is a private college, while TMC is run by a state‑government society.

By raising rail connectivity, expanding education, boosting food security and strengthening health facilities, Saha hopes to accelerate Tripura’s growth and align with Modi’s vision for a developed India.
