Mohla, October 15 – The quiet districts of Mohla, Manpur and Ambagarh Chowki in Chhattisgarh, once known for Naxal activity, are now buzzing with new homes. Government houses are flowing into every family, turning long‑held dream of owning a property into reality.

The change is driven by the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the central government’s flagship rural housing scheme. Thousands of households that lived in mud huts with leaking roofs now have sturdy, permanent homes. “We used to live in a mud house where water leaked in the rainy season. After the PMAY help, we built a pucca house and we don’t face these problems any more,” says Kamal Singh Yadav, a local beneficiary.

Babita, another grateful family member, added, “The government’s assistance gave us a permanent house. In the past, we struggled with damp walls and roof leaks. Now we’re comfortable and safe.”

PMAY – GRAM, launched on 1 April 2016, targets every houseless household and those in damaged homes. The Ministry of Rural Development partners with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to design and build homes with basic amenities, tackling the rural housing shortage and moving Chhattisgarh closer to the national “Housing for All” promise.

The government picks eligible families from the Socio‑Economic and Caste Census (SECC) and confirms them through village councils (Gram Sabhas). The Union Cabinet has now approved the scheme for 2024‑25 to 2028‑29, aiming to construct an extra 2 crore houses across India.

For 2024‑25, the ministry has earmarked 84,37,139 houses nationwide, with 46,56,765 allocated to nine states, including Chhattisgarh, between December 2024 and January 2025. By February 2, 2025, authorities had already sanctioned 39,82,764 houses.

This rapid rollout of PMAY homes is showing that a well‑targeted housing program can revive communities, reduce poverty, and transform districts like Mohla, Manpur and Ambagarh Chowki into models of progress away from their Naxal past.
