Women’s World Cup: This was the day we could have beaten England, says Fatima Sana

Pakistan’s women were on the verge of a historic win against England in a rain‑ridden ICC Women’s World Cup match at R. Premadasa Stadium. They had risen to 34 for no loss in 6.4 overs, chasing a bowler‑friendly target of 113 after a DLS calculation, only for the game to end in a no‑result when the clouds returned.

Captain Fatima Sana was visibly disappointed. “We could have beaten them,” she said. “The pitch was good for fast bowlers, and we tried to use the movement. It was a golden chance, and having it washed out is heartbreaking.” Her effort as a bowler was a highlight: 4 wickets for 27 runs, taking out England’s top order, including Amy Jones and Heather Knight.

England’s chase began promisingly. Diana Baig and Sadia Iqbal chipped in, but after a three‑hour rain break, England could finish at 133 for 9 in their 31‑over quota. They had also dealt with seaming conditions that proved difficult to handle early on.

Pakistan’s chase started optimistic with openers Muneeba Ali and Omaima Sohail scoring quick runs. However, rain halted play again before the team could buffer a full 31 overs. The result meant both sides shared points, denting Pakistan’s semifinal hopes—especially after this being their third washout in the tournament.

England’s Nat Sciver‑Brunt admitted her side struggled against the early seam. “Pakistan bowled brilliantly, and we were outplayed,” she said. “We need to adapt quickly to new conditions and find the right tools to take wickets.”

For Pakistan, the lesson is clear. While the bowlers performed, the batting will need improvement. Fatima praised the openers’ effort but emphasized the importance of better run‑scoring in future games.

Both teams now look forward to the next match, hoping clear skies will allow a decisive game to decide who moves on to the semifinals.
