Assam’s Baksa district plunged into turmoil on Wednesday after supporters of the late singer‑songwriter Zubeen Garg protested against the decision to house five men accused in his death case. The unrest prompted the state government to shut down mobile internet across the district, a move aimed at preventing further violence and restoring calm.
The ban on mobile data was announced by local authorities to keep order while the situation remained tense. Police officers in the district lost many of their regular duties, with all leave requests halted—except for urgent medical emergencies—by the Assam Police hierarchy.
The spark for the violence erupted when the five accused were taken to Baksa district jail under a tight police escort. On arrival, a large crowd gathered outside the jail, demanding that two of the accused—Shyamkanu Mahanta, a festival organiser, and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s manager—be brought before the public. The mob began throwing stones, injuring a policewoman and damaging several police vehicles.
Security forces used batons to disperse the crowd, and several people were arrested for unlawful assembly. In response, District Magistrate Gautam Das immediately issued a prohibitory order covering a 500‑metre radius around the jail. The order bans all public gatherings, rallies, processions, and the use of weapons such as sticks, daggers, spears, swords, stones, or firecrackers.
The ruling cites concerns that the chaotic environment near Baksa jail could “breach public peace and tranquility.” Anyone violating the ban will face strict legal action under relevant laws. The prohibitory measures are in effect until authorities announce otherwise.
The shutdown of mobile internet and the stop on public gatherings underline the authorities’ efforts to keep the region safe while the investigation into Zubeen Garg’s untimely death continues.
